Matarbari Deep Sea Port — Gateway for Mother Vessels & Mega Projects

Matarbari Port & Inland Container Services JAR GROUP Operations & Documentation Deep Sea Vessel in Bangladesh

Matarbari Deep Sea Port is Bangladesh’s first true deep-sea port, located at Matarbari Island in Maheshkhali Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Developed around an artificial harbour with a design water depth of about 16 metres, the port is connected to the open sea through a 14.3 km-long, approximately 350 m-wide navigation channel, enabling access for large container and bulk carriers.

Initially conceived to serve the 1,200 MW Matarbari coal power plant, the project has been expanded into a full commercial deep sea port to reduce reliance on transshipment hubs and to support Bangladesh’s long-term trade growth, mega-projects and regional connectivity.

Planning future calls at Matarbari?
JAR GROUP is preparing integrated services across port agency, ISO tank logistics, project cargo, ship recycling and inland connections linked with Matarbari, Chattogram, Mongla, Payra and Pangaon ICT.

Terminals, Draft & Vessel Capacity

In its first development phase, Matarbari Deep Sea Port includes:

• A 460 m-long container terminal designed for vessels exceeding 8,000 TEU capacity
• A 300 m-long multipurpose terminal for general and bulk cargo
• A harbour basin and channel with design depths around 16 m, enabling drafts of roughly 14.4–18 m depending on tides
• Planned capacity that can scale from initial hundreds of thousands of TEUs to several million TEUs per year in future phases

Container Handling, Barges & Heavy-Lift Operations

Container Handling Operations Project Cargo Discharge from Barge Port Agency Operations

With deep draft and dedicated terminals, Matarbari is positioned to become a hub for:

• Direct calls by large container vessels (mother vessels)
• Multipurpose and project cargo ships serving power, energy and industrial projects
• Barges and feeder services connecting to other Bangladeshi ports and inland nodes
• Heavy-lift, ODC and bulk cargo movements for regional development corridors

Ship Recycling, Demolition & Coastal Project Support

Ship Breaking Yards Ship Demolition Activity Steel Recycling from Vessels

Located within the broader coastal industrial zone that includes ship recycling, power and logistics projects, Matarbari Deep Sea Port will complement ship demolition and steel recycling activities by:

• Improving access for demolition candidates and support vessels
• Facilitating movement of recovered steel and components into domestic industry
• Providing logistics support to contractors, surveyors and buyers involved in recycling projects

Matarbari Port is a under-construction sea-port on the shores of Bay of Bengal, located at Matarbari area of Chittagong division, Bangladesh. Construction of the port began in the late 2010s with the construction of a Captic Jetty for the Matarbari Power Plant, and later the Government of Bangladesh undertook a project to build a full-fledged commercial port. After construction, it will be Bangladesh’s first deep-sea port. It is estimated that the cost for the construction of the port in the first phase will be ৳177.77 billions to ৳200.00 billions including the approach road.

The port consists of an artificial harbour, and its navigable channel is surrounded by Breakwaters. The harbour has a depth of 16 m (52 ft) and able to accommodate panamax and capesize ships. Cargo will be handled through container berths and multi-purpose cargo berths at the harbour. the port has a navigable channel about 14.3 km (8.9 mi) long and 350 m (1,150 ft) wide with a depth of 16 m (52 ft), which is the deepest among ports in Bangladesh. The port’s draft ranges from about 14.4 m (47 ft) to a maximum of 18 m (59 ft) with tidal support, which will allow entry for carrying more than 8,000 TEUs or 100,000 deadweight tons container ships.

On September 13th, JICA, Economic Relation Division (ERD), Ministry of Shipping (MoS) and Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) signed the Record of Discussion in the presence of Mr. Hiroyuki Yamaya, Charge d’Affaires ad interim, EOJ for the “The Project for Capacity Development on Operation, Maintenance and Management in Matarbari Port”. This technical cooperation project aims to strengthen the capacity of CPA in order to efficiently operate and maintain the Matarbari Port, the first and the only deep seaport in Bangladesh.

Matarbari Port is modelled after the Japanese ports of Kashima and Niigata. In the same way that these Japanese ports played a crucial role in Japanese economic development, Matarbari Port can play the same role for Bangladesh’s further economic development by facilitating international trade and commerce. Matarbari Port is scheduled to open in 2025.
